JY&A Consulting gives Alliance Party’s new logo plenty of polish
Wellington, May 8 (JY&A
Media) The Alliance Party
is looking more modern and relevant, thanks to its new logo by JY&A
Consulting (http://jya.net/consulting).
Devised by JY&A Consulting’s Jack Yan, the
new logo signifies a new beginning for the democratic socialist
political party.
Mr Yan says that there was still a misperception
that the Hon Jim Anderton MP was the leader of the party, even though
he left twice, the most recent occasion over two General Elections
ago.
‘A lot of that misperception came because the
Alliance has opted to retain the same logo,’ he says.
However, since Mr Anderton departed to set up
his Progressive Coalition Party, the Alliance Party has had several
leadership changes.
Current co-leaders Kay Murray and Andrew McKenzie
are determined to make the Alliance a relevant party for New Zealanders.
‘We have two major parties in New Zealand that
vote pretty much the same on all issues,’ says Mr Yan, ‘and minor
parties that get ignored because of a lack of visibility. I wanted
to change that. Why should minor parties be laboured with second-rate
brands?’
While Mr Yan acknowledges that the Alliance’s
budgets are far smaller than its major rivals’, he says he wanted
it to have a confident logo that expresses the conviction of its
policies such as full employment for New Zealanders.
‘If you believe in decent policies that are aimed
at narrowing the gap between rich and poor, provide free healthcare
and education for New Zealanders, and limit foreign domination of
our business interests, you may as well look sharp and believe in
it,’ he says.
‘These are contemporary values shared by all New
Zealanders—even though they have been abandoned by larger parties—and
the party needs a contemporary logo.’
The logo is based around the Frutiger typeface
and its lettering is predominantly in red, with a red dot over the
i in Alliance to signify its environmental awareness.
He says the letter i also shows the humanizing
aspect of the party.
‘As a piece of design I think it looks more cohesive
than the committee-led logos of National and Labour,’ he says.
‘I was given a lot of freedom, which is a good
sign of how the party leadership handles matters. It clearly believes
in trusting the right people.’
He says he dropped the idea of a symbol because
the Alliance needed something unambiguous, preferring the use of
a single word.
Mr Yan says he has been observing elections in
the UK, US and New Zealand for decades and that successful campaigns
seldom relied on a single symbol, but the party name.
Mr Yan also publishes the fashion
magazine Lucire on several continents but in some circles
he is better known as a branding consultant and author. He co-wrote
Beyond Branding
in 2003 and is a director of the Medinge
Group, a branding think-tank based in Sweden.
In October 2007 he was a keynote speaker for the
Alliance Party at its annual conference.
